Luanda, Angola: aerial view of the Luanda oil refinery, Angola's oldest and only operational oil refinery, located in the capital city, Luanda. Established in 1958 during the colonial era, the refinery has played a crucial role in Angola's petroleum sector, processing crude oil primarily for domestic consumption. Despite its significance, the refinery has long struggled with outdated infrastructure and limited capacity, producing only a fraction of the country's refined petroleum needs. As Angola is one of Africa's largest oil producers, the country has relied heavily on expensive imports of refined products. To address these challenges, the Angolan government has initiated modernization and expansion projects, including the construction of new refineries and the rehabilitation of the Luanda facility, aiming to boost production capacity, reduce imports, and enhance energy security.
