Helen Bennett was born in Anjean, West Virginia. In 1951 she graduated cum laude as a history major from Asbury University in Kentucky. In 1951 she was accepted as an A3 short-term Methodist missionary and went to Lisbon, Portugal to learn Portuguese and then on to Quessua, Angola, where she was the Director of the Quessua grammar school and also taught typing. Helen returned to the USA in 1954 to study at Berea College in Kentucky. She taught in New Jersey from 1955 until 1964, when she married George L. Murray. In 1973, during the end of her marriage, she returned to teaching to provide for her two small children. She was their sole provider and parent. She retired in 1994. In retirement she continued to be very active in church activities. Helen Bennett Murray was a brilliant, vibrant woman with sparkling blue eyes that radiated a rare kindness. She was a devoted mother, a loving grandmother, and a special friend to many. She died on December 19, 2012 at age 83.
