but with these lived several species <br> which are now found as far south as Foveaux Straits e g Voluta <br> pacifica Triton Spengleri Venus StutcJiburyi and Pectunculus lati- <br> costatus Prom 20 to 45 per cent of the species of Mollusca and <br> Brachiopoda are recent Possil plants of the system are numerous <br> near Tapanui in Otago Dr Zittel has described several Mollusca <br> from Cape Eodney JSTapier cliffs near Nelson and the Awatere <br> Valley Dr Stoliczka has described the Bryozoa and F Karrer <br> the Foraminifera from Orakei Bay <br> The following may be considered as characteristic <br> Cardium spatiosum Button <br> Crassatella ampla Zittel <br> Limopsis insolita Sow <br> Pecten secta Hutton <br> Triphooki Zittel <br> accrementa Hutton <br> Ostrea ingens Zittel <br> Flabellum corbicula Ten - Woods <br> Platyhelia distans Ten - Woods <br> Cominella Eobinsoni Zittel <br> Voluta corrugata Hutton <br> Pleurotoma sulcata Hutton <br> Conus Trailli Hutton <br> Natica solida Sow <br> Struthiolaria cincta Hutton <br> tuberculata Hutton <br> Dentalium Mantelli Zittel <br> Iffive Hutton <br> ˘ solidum Hutton <br> Pectunculus glohosus Hutton and Ostrea nelsoniana Zittel may <br> also be considered as characteristic but they occur as well in the <br> Oamaru System Indeed these two systems are closely connected <br> palseontologically and the following highly characteristic species <br> occur equally in both but do not occur outside these systems <br> - - Quart- Journ Geol Soc xv p 670 ;
