No known maps could be found of it online or in any library, but today we not only know where it is, there are a number of photos of it online as well as maps and videos. But not all are happy with this - because for many years the Mystery of the Great Cave was only known to Park rangers and a handful of others who swore never to tell where the Great Cave lay. My map will get you there and it also has gps numbers to help as well. After the Precipice, Beehive and East Face Trail were built, it was decided that the best way to attract more hikers to those trails was to build a trail to this great cave. It worked, maybe too well, and years later the Great Cave trail was abandoned, and for many years lost to time. Old accounts tell how entire families would hike to the great cave with picnic baskets in hand, and that the opening of the great cave was 100 feet wide and 100 feet high and ran back into the mountainside another 100 feet or so. Accounts even boasted that the opening was large enough to fit a small plane into. Well - perhaps, but that small plane had better be carried into the cave in pieces. You see, the great cave is indeed 100 feet tall and does go some distance into the mountain side, but it is no where near 100 feet wide, Do a google search for THE GREAT CAVE OF ACADIA NATIONAL PARK and you should be able to find photos and even videos on it.
