The spokes are under tension so that the wheel does not simply collapse. Could not wheels be made with strings? Would not wheels with strings rather than metal spokes be lighter and more aerodynamic? Could stringed wheels be made of highly durable carbon fiber/kevlar string? I guess it is a good thing I am not a structural engineer.
