It was unveiled May 30th, 1894, during a great reunion of Confederate Veterans. The column is a counterpart, on a reduced scale, of the famous pillar at Alexandria, Egypt, named after Pompey; and the colossal bronze figure surmounting it is that of a typical Confederate soldier; said to be one of the largest pieces of solid bronze ever cast in this country.
