I don't think he or she was afraid at all, just cautious and going his or her own way. No theatrics. Black Bears really can be very gentle. A while back I posted a few photographs and video of a Black Bear family on a giant cedar tree. I was quite close to the momma bear with cubs and she was fine. Again, cautious and making every effort to get her cubs to leave the area but she did not seem very threatened by me. And we were pretty close to one another. But, I also didn't surprise the bear and (I imagine) she did not feel "cornered" in any way.
