Keywords: Kelowna is a city of about 120 thousand people. I have never seen anyone shooting street photography here. I thought it would be a challenge to try, because there isn't too many people (let alone interesting people). I thought if I could shoot 30 mediocre shoots I'd do great, and if I got one good shot I'd be rocking it. I knew there was a possibility for some trouble, because of the large number of transients and drug addicts that hang out downtown. However, I didn’t think it would end up being as bad as it was.
I have been shooting street photography in Kelowna for a month and a half now, but now I am calling it quits. It's not a big deal, because I was only going to try it for the summer. I am quitting it, because of all the druggie psychopaths. Downtown Kelowna is small, but it has a very large amount of transients, mentally ill people, and drug addicts. Most people hang out downtown at the Sails and at City Park. This, however, is where all these nut cases also like to hang out. The park is so full of these people that it is totally embarrassing! There are so many of them that it is like there are small communities of them living there. They sleep around the park in the day time and bring in their shopping carts....it's an utter embarrassment. What makes it worse is that this is where large numbers of tourists come!
While shooting I had two confrontations with these nut cases. One meth head came up to me and wanted his picture taken, so I took it. Then I headed over to City Park to meet up with my family. This clown followed me, all the while talking about child porn and diversity. He then wanted to break my camera and fight me. Whether I took his picture or not he would have done the same thing. He was the craziest person I have ever come across. The second nut I came across went into a violent rage in a split second. He didn't care that there was women and children around. There was about 20 tourists there waiting to get on their bus....they got to see the real Kelowna first hand. These people are total losers. Some of them you can talk to and have an okay conversation, but some of them are so messed up that they are no good for anyone....the dregs of society! If I go downtown again and this loser sees me, he will break my camera and break my face.
There are so many of these losers around that you will end up taking a picture of them at one time or another. Is it worth the chance of getting your camera and face broken every time you hit the streets, because Kelowna has such a high number of these people hanging around the place where almost all your pictures will be taken? Are they going to stab or beat you to death? What if one of them goes mental and a few of their friends that are sleeping or hanging out under the shady trees run over and join in? Then you will have to fight against a group of people. Or how about, if you took a picture of a group of them and they all came after you? It is one thing to deal with one person, but it is another thing to deal with a group. Plus it's harder to defend yourself when you have a camera around your neck. If I was to continue shooting downtown until winter, how many of these confrontations would I have?!
Well, I managed to get twice as many shots as I thought I would. I actually got a few pictures that aren't too bad. So ya, I did pretty good considering. Most of my shots were around the Sails. The tourists and normal people didn't really mind me taking their pictures. As far as street photography in Kelowna goes, it isn't good. It is not a big city where there are lots of people and places to take pictures of. The tourists and regular people are pretty boring, because there are not many people with character. The transients are the most interesting to shoot, but also the craziest people. So in the end you will be posting a lot of boring and mediocre shots. On the other hand, you will get the odd one that is fairly good....considering it's Kelowna.
Two thumbs up for street photography!
