We agreed with Piia yesterday that we'd swing by her place of work and join her for lunch. The place she works in is in the former heavy industrial manufacturing area next to the harbour. Much of the (largely now redundant) area is being converted into a new residential suburb with much construction going on. Some of the industrial buildings are being retained and repurposed in the spirit of the Urban Splash developments in the North West of England. Piia works with a company in the 'Cable Factory', a former Nokia cable factory, which has been converted into a range of exhibition spaces and business units. The place is vast and well worth seeing. As I mentioned, it's close to the harbour, and what we've got here is a not unusual scene for the Baltic in February. Due to the northern latitudes, consistent low temperatures and not least the low salinity of the water, it is prone to freezing in a way we're not used to seeing in Britain.
