I was woken up with a start at 5am by a noise outside and had no chance getting back to sleep. By half seven I'd given up and went out for a walk. My walk took me along Tunnel Road, which isn't named for any tunnel under the Mersey, but instead some of the great rail tunnels. Edge Hill was a site of major rail importance that became less so as locomotives grew powerful enough to manage the long climb out of Liverpool unaided. This interesting bit of statuary takes us back to the very earliest days of global rail when Edge Hill was on the map. A bit of a long day today.
