When I was there it was heavily involved in particle physics, and was always building some bloody stupidly expensive neutron detector or somesuch to bolt onto the synchrotron at CERN. When I saw this object it REALLY reminded me of one of those detector arrays. It's actually the somewhat more humble motor out of one of the vacuum cleaners, and at £45 it was a big lump cheaper as well!
