I looked up, and there it was, sort of. It wasn't a rainbow but a circumhorizontal arc fragment, caused by light doing interesting things in some high altitude cirrus clouds. It looked a lot more intense in real life, but I only had my phone with me. What I really needed was a polarising lens, which of course was why the reflection in the car window was so vivid, as it was polarised.
