We met up with underthesun and her mad boyfriend, which is always nice, and then we got the ferry across to Suomenlinna which is a fabulous place! It's basically a huge defensive fortress built on a group of islands just off the Helsinki shore. The place was first built around the 1700s and is pretty much impenetrable. To this day, although it has been surrendered in a wider context, it was never taken by force. The ferry there is pretty much analagous to the Mersey Ferries, providing a regular shuttle service that is part of the city public transport system. The whole site has been designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site as a prime preserved example of military architecture, and it's well worth a visit. There's so many photos I could use, but I've decided to go for one from lunchtime, where we sat on a rocky beach in the blistering sun eating our lunch. This of course is Lingy the Bear topping up his tan, and I've chosen it because it could be anywhere on the Med, such was the brilliance. But it was Finland. Ace. :) Lots to choose from for today!
