After several years practising law he became a student in the School in 1962, was appointed an assistant lecturer in 1964 and was awarded his PhD in 1966. He was made Professor in 1982. His research has been primarily on the law relating to police powers and to commercial crime. He has been a member of the Canadian Government Working Party on Securities Regulation, and in the UK, a member of the Attorney General’s Committee on Fraud Offences.
