The old Courthouse, viewed at the NW corner of Cambie and Pender Streets. Built in 1888 (wing with dome completed in 1890), it was the first major public building outside the old Gastown area. Demolished in 1912 when the new Courthouse opened at Georgia and Hornby Sts., the site was used for recruiting during the Great War years. After the war, a Cenotaph was erected and the park officially dedicated as Victory Square (1924). The flag in the photograph is flying at half-mast in honour to San Francisco after news of their disastrous earthquake and fire of April 18, 1906. "The Court House, Vancouver, B.C."
