| Keywords: P2V-5 RNLNavy NAN10-56.jpg A Lockheed P2V-5 P-2E Neptune of the Koninklijke Marine Royal Netherlands Navy The aircraft was built for the Netherlands but had the U S Navy Bureau Number 134671 assigned However it has the last four digits of the Lockheed construction number painted on the nose wheel doors 426-5273 It was delivered to the Koninklijke Marine on 8 December 1953 as 19-21 later the hull number was changed to 086 It was returned on 9 March 1962 and passed on to the to Portuguese Air Force as FAP 4701 Following negotiations between the governments of the Netherlands and Portugal 12 Dutch P2V-5s were transferred to the Portuguese Air Force serials 4701-4712 The P2V-5s replaced Lockheed PV-2 Harpoons of Esquadra de Reconhecirnento Maritime 61 Maritime Reconnaissance Squadron at Base Aerea No 6 at Montijo located near Lisbon Contrary to the NATO charter Portuguese P-2Es were used in combat operations during Portugal's colonial wars in Africa In the late 1960s two P-2Es were assigned to BA 9 at Luanda Angola and carried out bombing missions and coastal patrols Others operated from the island of Sao Tome during the Biafra war At Portuguese Guinea-Bissau BA 12 operated a pair of P-2Es in the bomber role By 1977 only four P-2Es remained operational at BA 6 the remainder having been scrapped or stripped for parts 4707 and 4711 were the last Neptunes that were finally withdrawn from service in 1978 U S Navy Naval Aviation News October 1956 http //www history navy mil/nan/backissues/1950s/1956/Oct56 pdf 1954/56 USN PD-USGov-Military-Navy Lockheed Neptune in Netherlands Naval Aviation service | ||||
