In his 1986 book, Archaeology of the Lower Ohio River Valley, SIUC archaeologist Jon Muller called attention to a 1936 aerial photograph that shows what are likely ridges and furrows of an old field pattern (OFP) inside the Kincaid site. No historic house is known from the vicinity of the OFP, so we thought it unlikely that the OFP was of historic date. Only one prehistoric ridged field is known from the eastern US, so the possibility that the OFP is hundreds of years old was exciting. We used geophysical instruments in an attempt to find out whether any part of the old field pattern is intact below the plow zone. Our 2016 excavations were near the tree line at the left; the OFP is at right center. In addition to the excavation, we explored a long-standing puzzle at the site.
