They asked scientists from the Fire in Eastern Oak Forests Conference 2015 for input. One important management goal is an herbaceous ground layer. Currently the ground plane is dominated by sassafras and maple regenerating after winter burns. The scientists here all agreed that overstory canopy cover is too high and that killing (rather than "knocking back) the sassafras and maple is absolutely required, and that this can only be done with summer burns, herbicide, or both. Not exactly welcome news. USFS employees discuss strategies for managing a ridges in the northern part of Bankhead NF as oak woodland.
