In the surprise raid, the planes, operating from a powerful U.S. Navy Task Force, inflicted heavy damage upon enemy airfields and other installations at Truk and probably sank or damaged 40 enemy ships in addition to destroying 201 Japanese aircraft.” U.S. Navy Photograph.
