Ovid writes in his poem “Fasti” that the Janiculum got its name from a Roman pagan god, Janus, who founded and named the hill. Janiculum Hill is located on the west bank of the Tiber River. It was not known as one of the original seven hills of Rome since it was outside of the boundaries of the city of ancient Rome. It was eventually incorporated into the city as a strategic location for Roman defense against outside invaders. It is also the site of a battle in 1844 between the Catholic French forces who sought to defend the pope's temporal power from the anti-Catholic forces of Garabaldi.
