In March 1980, a refuge for women, which was officially called 534 Queen’s Avenue, was opened by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The residence offered women in need short term stays of a few days, to longer stays of up to six months. From 1999 to 2003, additional beds were added to house the “Crashbeds” program for homeless women unable to stay in other shelters which had a separate staff unit. The need for this program exceeded the available space and was relocated to another facility. Because of the need to continue providing for a safe place for women, the Sisters decided to provide the financial and moral support to ensure the doors to My Sister’s Place opened in 2004. In 2005, My Sister’s Place was relocated to King Street. women londonontario sistersofstjoseph |
