The fleet departed for New Zealand on 6 August. The fleet included USS CALIFORNIA (V), USS COLORADO (III), USS TENNESSEE (III), USS MARYLAND (III), USS WEST VIRGINIA (II), USS NEW MEXICO (I), USS MISSISSIPPI (III) and USS IDAHO (IV). On 24 July, 'The Sydney Morning Herald' reported on the fleet's arrival and the appearance of RELIEF: 'At the end of the long procession of battleships came a smaller ship, built on entirely different lines, and painted white. One knew at once that this was the hospital ship Relief. Coming after the great male battleships in their uniform of war grey, she lent a touch of feminine interest to the array. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
