In 1613, Sackville fought a duel with Edward Bruce, 2nd Lord Kinloss, for the hand of Venetia Stanley, a granddaughter of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby. They fought in Bergen-op-Zoom, Netherlands to avoid the wrath of King James I. In the bloody affray that followed, Sackville was run through the body and lost a finger while attempting to disarm Kinloss, but ultimately dispatched his opponent with two thrusts to the chest. Though gravely wounded, Sackville survived, but Venetia Stanley ultimately married Sir Kenelm Digby. Before he became Lord Chamberlain in 1642, Sackville served as Queen Henrietta Maria's Lord Chamberlain in the 1630s.
