Keywords: Eddington Canterbury Road 1908.jpg Tinted postcard of Eddington Herne Bay Kent England Postmarked Herne Bay Au 10 08 The picture shows the original village or hamlet long before the area became a suburb of Herne Bay Publisher Photochrom Co Ltd London Most of the buildings in the photo still exist The site is on the east side of the Canterbury Road A299 looking north just north of Priory House at the southern end of Eddington Points of interest The house in the foreground is in the Kentish vernacular style with limewashed weatherboarding but the taller houses are late Victorian There is no footpath The orange-red roofs of the buildings in the foreground are pan-tiled Among the green-tinted bushes just above the white picket fence of the weatherboarded house there is possibly a figure in the garden which has been obliterated by the green added colouring It is just to the left of the open white picket gate The dark figure in the middle of the road may have been sketched in The low building with double doors and tall chimney in the centre of the picture may have been the forge which is recorded at this crossroads Also recorded here is the guidepost or signpost which can just be seen on the left side of the road in the distance Standing out in the distance on the left side of the road is a tall chimney which may be the sewer vent column which is a listed building Scan of original postcard in my possession 1908 anon out of copyright PD-old-70-1923 Historical images of Eddington Kent Postcards of Kent 1900s postcards Clapboards building material |
