According to the secret files kept on the von Luckners by the Commonwealth Investigation Branch (CIB), Muller was: ‘afraid to go ashore because he cannot resist the city hotels and as he is 62 years of age cannot stand up to hard drinking.' These files are held within the National Archives of Australia. For more information on Count von Luckner's visit see our blog post 'Espionage and paranoia: The Sea Devil tours Australia'. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
