The wreckage lay in 17 feet of water during salvage operations and is here shown during low tide. The plane is assumed to have landed approximately 350 yards from this spot, where the tail assembly broke off and the plane skimmed to a stop on tidal flats about one mile off shore due west of Hamchon. It was located by aircraft from a British aircraft carrier on July 13 and a salvage operation was organized with units of the Royal British Navy, the ROK Navy, and U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force all taking part. In front of the right is a man engaged in salvage operations and what appears to be insignia on the wing tips, is really coils of rope used in the operation. Object to rear of plane is a piece of fuselage. On July 18, prior to salvage operations, some activity, presumed to be enemy, was observed in the crash vicinity. No serious opposition to the salvage was encountered, although UN aircraft flying cover received some ground fire, and working parties reported hearing small arms and automatic weapons fire. The recovery was completed on July 21 and the wreckage arrived at the Air Technical Intelligence Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on July 29 and has been dismantled and sent to various installations for study. Photograph released August 31, 1951.
