The arched construction of the Victorian bridge meant that there wasn't sufficient height for the overhead electric cables to pass under. Harpers Lane bridge closed to traffic on 6th May 2014 and re-opened 1 year ago on 24th October. Work included temporary rerouting of water and gas pipes, electricity cables, telephone cables and cable T.V. systems. A temporary pedestrian bridge was also constructed. This was followed by complete demolition of the old bridge and reconstruction of the new one.
