But what was it originally? A hotel perhaps? Well if that is what you were thinking you were on the right track. Standish House was a model boarding house, one of two in Chorley, the other (demolished) being situated in King Street. During the Victorian era there were many boarding houses offering accommodation to workers. The buildings were generally in a state of dis-repair and the living conditions were squalid with several occupants sharing a room. Model boarding houses were built to redress these problems offering better sanitation and less overcrowding. Standish House is probably a late example being built in 1908.
