Pharmacist's Mate Willis, though himself wounded, advanced to a shell-hole in the front lines on 02/28/1945, to aid a wounded Marine. When the Japs threw grenades into the crater, he hurled them back- returning 8 of the missiles in this fashion. The 9th exploded in his hand, killing him. Present at the award ceremony in the Navy Department were (left to right) Senator Kenneth McKeller, Representative Wirt Courtney, Senator Thomas Stewart (all of Tennessee); Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, U.S. Navy, and Jane Willis, sister of the hero.
